Never practiced Jiu-Jitsu before? Unsure what to wear or if you need to be in shape to start? It's perfectly normal to have questions before your first class. At Círculo de Jiu-Jitsu in Madrid, we regularly welcome people who are complete beginners. Here, we answer the most frequently asked questions so you can come to the mat knowing what you need and how your integration into the school will work.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should I wear on the first day?

If you don't yet have a gi, you can come to your first class in comfortable sportswear. You don't need to buy equipment before you know if Jiu-Jitsu is for you. Our school also offers gi rentals, as well as kimonos and rashguards/leggings. For hygiene reasons, we recommend wearing a rashguard under your gi. It's also a good idea to bring flip-flops to move between the mat and the changing rooms, and a towel if you want to shower after training.

  • I've never practiced Jiu Jitsu, can I train with you?

Of course. You don't need any prior experience in Jiu-Jitsu or any other martial art to start at Círculo de Jiu-Jitsu. We welcome new beginners every week and give them special attention so they can learn gradually and feel part of the group. We'll teach you the fundamentals and progress according to your level. Our first trial class is free, so you can come, experience the school's atmosphere, and discover firsthand what it's like to train BJJ.

  • Do I need to be in good physical shape to practice Jiu Jitsu?

No. You don't need to be in shape before starting Jiu-Jitsu; in fact, the training will progressively help you improve your physical condition. It doesn't matter if you haven't played sports in a while or if you've never practiced a martial art before. The learning process adapts to each person's level, and you'll progress as you train. BJJ combines technique and physical activity, so with regular practice, you'll develop endurance, mobility, and other abilities as you learn.

  • Am I too old to start practicing BJJ?

We have students of all ages, so there's no single right age to discover Jiu-Jitsu. As we like to say: the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now. You don't need to have started as a child or have any prior sports experience. We'll adapt the learning to your level and progress so you can enjoy the training, improve steadily, and discover everything this sport has to offer.

  • Can I get hurt while training in Jiu Jitsu?

At Círculo de Jiu Jitsu, we take special care of our students, especially those just starting out. We progress at each person's pace and promote a training method based on mutual respect and care. Our mat etiquette clearly states that intentionally harming another person is prohibited. The goal is to learn together, so every practitioner should care for their training partners in the same way they expect to be cared for.

  • Is there a registration fee or minimum commitment required to train at Círculo de Jiu Jitsu?
